Marilyn Manson: Unlikely Makeup Icon

Marilyn Manson is kind of the dark horse of the beauty world — while he doesn't seem immediately glamorous at first glance, getting his goth look actually takes a fair amount of time and to achieve. The reason I, and now the rest of the world, know this is that in a recent Reddit AMA Marilyn Manson shared his beauty secrets, revealing exactly how to get his signature look.

If you've always wondered how Manson gets that precise shade of deathly pallor or tints his lips to that perfect muddy blood red, wonder no longer! He not only dished on his process, but also revealed the actual products he uses. He also has his elaborate makeup routine down pat, saying the entire application takes him under five minutes.

He told Reddit users, "One thing I do when I do my makeup is I use my fingers a lot. And I can do my own makeup probably in less than 5 minutes, depending on what type of makeup I’m doing. I usually use a combination between M.A.C. and AquaColor and Makeup For Ever. And Christian Dior."

He went on to get even more specific, saying, "I usually use Christian Dior foundation, and AquaColor blue-whatever, and then when it comes to black, I like to use a mixture of different things. But I like to try to use things that stay put, and I find that Makeup For Ever does a pretty solid job of that. So does M.A.C., for different things."

So it turns out, just like supermodel Gisele Bundchen, the secret to flawlessly attaining this look is fingertip application, which allows perfect control as well as a more natural finish. And if you're looking for something that's going to last through even the most humid days, even when you're wearing a full-on pleather catsuit, Make Up For Ever seems to do the trick. I've gathered a few of Manson's favorite products below so you can channel his goth-glam look in your own life.

Ash white foundation and smears of shoplifted eyeliner were the early instruments of Brian Warner's metamorphosis into Marilyn Manson. The shock value of a man in lipstick has faded since Manson's '90s heyday, when he horrified the mothers of America with his androgynous and occultish looks. But, at 46, he still wears makeup every day.

"I suppose my fascination with makeup comes from me having a great imagination and not being able to contain it just to a piece of paper or a piece of music. When I was a kid, I used to do the KISS makeup with watercolor paints. I was into KISS mostly because I was told not to listen to it in Christian school. But Alice Cooper and Bowie were more important to me. KISS wore too much of a mask; it was too much kabuki. I wanted to be seen, I just didn't want to be seen the same way that I was. Ziggy Stardustfirst led me to shave off my eyebrows. People look at you trying to figure out what's missing or wrong, and you can do a lot more with makeup when your eyebrows are out of the way."
